Whitburn win third consecutive promotion!!

Whitburn achieved a feat that few other teams have achieved as with a 3-1 over Lochore they secured a third promotion in a row cheered on by a bumper crowd of 432. It took a long time for the game to settle into a pattern and it wasn’t till the 23rd minute that the first corner came and it almost produced a goal. Jack Henderson took it low and Mick McGarahan met it with his boot but it went over. The opening goal came five minutes later Andy Thomson played a one two with Kevin Fotheringham and was fouled close to the bye line and Ross Crawford netted his 29th goal of the season scoring to the keeper’s left. With 35 minutes gone, in a rare attack 10 had a shot from 25 yards that went just over. A great move three minutes later saw Crawford pass back to Max Condie who found Darren Liddell and he curled in a beauty from the edge of the box to double the lead. In the 41st minute Condie just got to the ball in front of the keeper and it broke to Crawford but he was unable to chip it over the keeper. The third goal would come a minute later when a fine Fortheringham cross from the right was headed back across the goal by Crawford and fired into the net by Liddell to take his season tally to 20. A minute to the break Liddell fed Crawford who scored but he was ruled offside.....................

Signing news

Two further players have arrived at the club in a bid to strenghthen the team they are midfielder Jack Hodge and defender/midfielder Euan McGill and we welcome them to Central Park! Moving out to pastures new are Ally McInness and Andy Johnstone who are now with Bathgate and Blckburn respectively - thank you both for your contributions at Central Park

Two new arrivals at the club at the start of the new year in the shape of Kevin Fotheringham and Pearse Carroll. Kevin was signed from Camelon and will supplement the attack whilst midfielder Pearse joins us from Falkirk. Also with the departure of Scott Woodhouse ex Blackburn player and assistant manager Craig Young joins the club. Welcome all three to the club!

We are pleased to announce another signing - Sammy Watson, defender and previously captain of Armadale. Welcome to the club!

With the severe injury to Danny Farrell a replacement experienced keeper suddenly became a necessity and Whitburn have filled the vacancy (at least until early February) with the arrival on loan from Bathgate of Sean Brown.

Under20s

Whitburn u20s travelled over the hill to Armadale’s Volunteer Park and came away with a 4-3 win in an entertaining game. They got off to a great start as good play down the left led to a corner after a post was struck and Blair Hughes rose highest to head the ball into the net. Armadale hit the post twice before Chris Hughes doubled the lead in the 34thminute firing diagonally from the right. Zane Russell made it three five minutes later with a typical mazy run followed by a left foot shot – a three goal lead that did not flatter them. The second half would not be as one sided and on the hour the ball was in the net off the post after a corner. However, another slick move down the left a minute later saw Ali Croall score with a diagonal shot from the left. Short of players and forced to commit the two subs with the team seeming to tire, Armadale started to exert more pressure and scored from a penalty in the 74th minute. Four minutes later they scored again to set up a nervy last ten or so minutes. Fortunately the team resumed their composure and kept the Dale at bay though they had a fright into added time when a player got wide right but he hit his shot well wide.

Cup Fixtures

With promotion obviously being the main goal this season (again), cup competitions have been of lesser importance and have not gone as well as the league campaign. Of the five cups that we contest (not counted is the Centenary Cup briefly described below) we are only in the League Cup at the time of writing - just after the 3-1 extra time win over Jeanfield Swifts. With this win we move into the quarter final where we play Preston Athletic at Central Park on Tuesday 21 May. Given that we split the points with Preston this should be an interesting game. he winner will host one of Haddington, Dunbar or Crossgates.

The final of the East of Scotland League Centenary Cup against Linlithgow at Prestonfield on Sunday 10 September proved to be a massive success and boost for the club as we ran out 3-2 winners. A fine day it was too as young Harrison Edwards catapulted us into a two goal lead early on and Ross Crawford another before Linlithgow got one back. Another, what would end up being a second consolation, came early in the second half. New keeper Danny Farrell had a fine game with a couple of great stops prior to his superb penalty save five minutes from the end. All players were heroes on the day and were well supported by a good travelling support. Well done to the management team too who got their game plan spot on!
