Whitburn earn dramatic last minute point with 2-2 draw v Hill of Beath

Hill of Beath last visited Central Park in late March 2014 and handed us a 5-1 win in the East of Scotland Cup. In this much tighter game they took the lead from a corner in the 6th minute which Whitburn made two attempts to clear before Jake Mitchell knocked the ball over the line from close in. Not a great deal happened till the 29thminute other than Hill of Beath continually punting a long ball and Whitburn being unable to breach the home defence who responded with numerous strong challenges. In the 29th minute Whitburn finally broke down that defence with their best move till then when Ross Crawford was freed down the right and swung in a great cross that Darren Liddell couldn’t quite get on the end of. In most games the ball would have gone out on the opposite flank and that was what the visiting players expected but Harrison Edwards had a different idea as he stopped the ball from going out, drove towards the box and sent in a pinpoint cross that Liddell headed in to equalise................

Signing news

A legend leaves: we are saddened to announce that long time fan favourite Grant Hamilton has left the club after 8 years of service. A great central defender who could read the game well also contributed a fair number of goals each season, mainly from headers at corners, Grant has moved to The Swifts FC and we wish him all the best!

The following players are already signed up for the new season: Sean Brown, Stevie Clarke, Ross Crawford, Harrison Edwards, Danny Farrell, Kevin Fotheringham, Jack Henderson, Darren Liddell,, Mick McGarahan, Andrew Thomson, Lennon Watson and Sammy Watson. Joining this select band are new men as follows: Thomas Penker a defender from Hutchison Vale, defender Stepane Murray from Edinburgh College, attacking midfielders Callum Hambrook and Cammy Graham (the former from East Fife and the latter from Berwick Rangers) and Andy Gillen who is a midfielder and was signed from Broxburn. Just before the first game the squad was brought up to 22 with the addition of Callum Bremner an experienced midfielder signed from Broxburn, Dylan McCafferty and Finlay Goodlad. Welcome to all the new players!!

Under 20s

Whitburn took the lead in the ninth minute when Chris Hughes scored the first of his eventual four goals from the penalty spot. Just three minutes later Stoneyburn were level from a free kick from the left corner of the box which went in off the underside of the bar. Callum Gray scored a second when he reacted to a save from the keeper which rebounded off him and he calmly slotted the ball home. With 66 minutes on the clock a long ball out of defence was knocked into space just over halfway and Hughes got on the end of it, rounded the keeper and hit it into the net from a tight angle. The late show saw three goals in the last three minutes with two more from Hughes, twice getting behind the defence and finding the net and then Callum Byrne from around 25 yards out and wide left scored with a great shot to fully secure the victory. For the record although it might seem as though 6-1 flattered Whitburn (especially with the three late goals), Whitburn had had numerous chances to add to their tally but their shooting was pretty wayward.
